Aldi removes cans in Germany
Deposit on oneway packings is closing in in Germany. On January 2. 2003 introduce some german supermarket chains deposit.
By Aldi South and Aldi North does that mean, that they only collect packings they also sell. At the same time are the supermarket removing cans and disposable bottles from the sortiment.

Interbrew sells Rostocker Brauerei to Brau und Brunnen
The Belgian brewerygigant Interbrew has decided to sell Rostocker Brauerei to the competitor Brau und Brunnen.
The Rostock-brewery was a part of the deal, when Interbrew bought Becks & Co. earlier this year. After the take over of Diebels, did the products from Rostock not fit the portfolio any more.
The sale has to be approved by the local competition authorities.

Ørbæk Bryggeri is ready with is't beers!
The revived brewery, Ørbæk Bryggeri, Denmark, has brought their first beer, Brown Ale, on the danish market.
The acknowledgement of the beers is comming fast.
Yesterday (thursday) recived the brewery to goldmedals for outstanding product development of ecology victuals in Denmark.
The Ørbæk Brown Ale was praised by a tasteboard for it's fine flavour, color and aftertaste.

Coors invests in UK
After the buy of the Carling-brand in UK in Februar, has Coors Brewers decided to make big investments i the Burton-on-Trent brewery. The investment plans will set the brewery back in the position as the biggest in the UK.
The work starts in December and last about a year. The investment will provide the brewery with canning, keg and bottling halls.
The total price will be 35m £.

Austral suspend operations in Argentina
The economic situation in Argentina force the brewer Cervecería Austral to suspend its operations in southern Argentina.
Austral focus on the Chilean market insted of Argentina.

Chilean beer to Europa and USA
The Chilean brewer Austral has experienced a dramatic rise in marketshare in less than two years. The companys premium beer is gone from 2 to 15 per cent from late 2000 to the end of 2001.
The brewer is now planing to begin an export to Europe and the USA in 2003.
Austral is 50% owned by the Chilean brewing giant CCU and 50% by the Chadwick family.

Strike on the brewerys in Norway hits the christmas brew
440 breweryworkers in Norway is in strike. There has not been transported beer from Ringnes, Aas, Hansa and Borg brewerys since october 16.
Soon it will be perceptible in the stores.
The brewring on Ringnes is not hit, therefore are the christmasbeers in the brewtanks. But it is doubtful if the beers can be transported to the costumers.

Beercans has a poor sale in Denmark
The Supermarket chain Dansk Supermarked consider to remove some of the beercan products from the stores, because of poor sales. The cansale is after a month in the stores only to per cent of the total sale.
Coop Danmark is neither satisfied with the sales. In Coop Danmark amount the sales to six per cent.

Tsingtao build in Taiwan
Taiwan Tsingtao Brewery are planing to build a new brewery to brew the Chinese Tsingtao beer under license to the Taiwan market.
The brewery would have a annual capacity of up to 200.000 tonnes beer.

Heineken i Costa Rica and Lebanon
Heineken will take 25-percent stakes in two Central American brewerys, Florida Bebidas SA of Costa Rica and Consorcio Cervecero Centroamericano SA of Nicaragua.
The Dutch brewer has also informt the it will buy 69 per cent of Almaza, Lebanon's sole brewery, from its majority shareholders, to add to a 10 per cent stake it has held for 42 years.
All three brewerys har market leaders in there countrys.

Beer in cans in Denmark
Two days before the announced performenceday for the reintroduction of beercans in Denmark, September 23., was the first cans in the stores.
Beer in cans are more expensive than beer in bottles.
Tuborg use the can-introduction to introduce a new beer T-Beer.

Rickard's Honey Brown
Molson announced the launch of Rickard's new Honey Brown. This unique ale, with an unequivocally different taste, is available in Canada.
Rickard's Honey Brown's recipe is inspired by an original brewing technique of Capilano Brewery in Western Canada. The subtle blend of roasted malt, hint of honey, and slow, natural fermentation results in a decidedly smooth tasting beer.

Heineken makes offer for ABC, Egypt
The Dutch brewer Heineken has offered $287m for Al Ahram Beveraages Compagny (ABC), Egypt. ABC has 95 per cent of the egyptian market and is the only brewery group, after it bought El Gouna Beverages Group in 1999.
ABC brews 430,000 hectolitres of beer, among these Carlberg Beer on licens.

Festival in Århus, Denmark
Time is running up for Danske Ølentusiasters (Danish Beerentusiasts) first attempt to arrange a Beerfestival in Jutland, Denmark.
The Festival are taking place at Ridehuset in Århus from Friday d. 25. to Sunday d. 27. October and about 400 different beers will be possible for the visitors to taste.

Bad half year for Interbrew
Net profits fall 18 per cent in the first half year of 2002 for the worlds third largest brewer Interbrew, Belgium.
The sale fell slightly from 3,48bn Euro to 3.42bn Euro.
Delays in the plans to integrate Beck?s and Interbrew?s distribution channels in North Amerika and Mexico costs a fall in sales of 13 per cent in that market.

Net profit rise 5,7 per cent for the Dutch brewer Royal Grolsch in the first-half of 2002.

Rolling brewery
Germanys first and only brewerymobil - a small brewery on a truck - was on the road for the first time Saturday in Lengenfeld by Waldershof, Germany.

Foster's had more turnover from wine than beer
Foster's, the Australia-based drinks group, has for the first time more turnover from its wine division, than the 114 year old beer division.
The wine division had a turnover, in the year to June, of A$ 1,93m (1,08m Euro), and the traditional beer division could only reach A$ 1,74m (975m Euro).
Foster's bought in 2000 the california based wineproducer Beringer and merged it with it?s own wine company Mildara Blass to Beringer Blass.

Heineken breaks with Interbrew in UK and change it's sortiment in UK
When Heinekens contract with the Interbrew owned Whitbread Beer Company expires in early 2003, takes the dutch brewer control of the marketing, sales and distribution of it's own beer in UK.
At the same time withdraw Heineken it's Heineken Cold Filtered (3.4% abv) and Heineken Export (5% abv) in the UK. Instead will Heineken premium beer (5 % abv) be launched in UK.
As a consequence of Heinekens decision has Carlsberg-Tetley and Interbrew UK entered into an agreement, that Interbrew can supply Carlsberg Beer to the many pubs, where the belgian brewer has contractual arrangements of supplying them with a leading lager brand.
In connection with the expansion of the distribution of Carlsberg, it has been agreed that the licence for brewing the Australian brand Castlemaine XXXX will be transferred from Carlsberg-Tetley to Interbrew UK on 4 January 2003.

Progres for Carlsberg
Carlsberg continues to raise the operating profit, by the first half year amounted the porfit to DKK 1,806m, against DKK 1,351m last year. That is a progres of 34 per cent.
The progress in beer volume was 22 per cent compared to last year. The Carlsberg brand showed an increase of 6 per cent.
The progres has been greatest in UK and Russia.

Kirin re-create 4000 year old beer
Kirin Brewery, Japan, has annonced that the brewery has re-created a 4000 year old egyptian beer, by following a recipe, which was depicted in old sepulchral paintings.
The beer became darkbrown and had a strong, sourish taste and an alcohol per cent on 10, even it is widely distributed, that old beers only had about 4,5 to 5,5 per cent alcohol.
The brewery reports, that the recipe is based on wallpaintings from burial chambres build in Egypt between 2650 and 2180 b.c.
Kirin reports also, that it has plans of re-create an other egyptian beer next year.

Carlsberg strengthen its position in Bulgaria
Carlsberg Breweries A/S has entered an agreement to acquire 67 per cent of the Bulgarian brewery Pirinsko Pivo. The shares are sold by a group of institutional and private investors.
Pirinsko Pivo, which is situated in Blagoevgrad 100 km south of the capital Sofia, has over the last few years experienced substantial growth and today has a market share of 12 per cent of a total market of approx. 4.5 million hectolitres beer. The Bulgarian per capita consumption is 54 litres.

Less German can-beers
The export of can-beers from Germany fall in 2001 14,2 per cent compared to 2000. Total was the export 308m litre beer in cans.
On the other hand increased the import of can-beers 0,6 per cent. Total was 217m litre sendt to Germany.
Spain is Germanys biggerst export-marked with 69,4m litre, followed by France with 42,8m litre.
Denmark is sovereign the biggerst exporter to Germany, 104,2m litre came from the danish brewers. Nederland take the second place with 64,7m litre.

Warsteiner falls back in Germany
Warsteiner Brauerei, Germany, has brewed 3,5 per cent less beer in the first half year of 2002. The keyproduct, Warsteiner, has lost 4,5 per cent.
The brewery has on the other hand had a progress on the exportmarkets. There is the sale gone up 10,7 per cent.

Beer on spacestation
The recidents on the International Space Station, ISS, will soon be allowed to drink beer onboard, alcoholfree beer of course. The beers are taped on special plasticbottles and will be sendt too ISS on the next transport, inform the russian tv-station RTR.

The danish Bryggerigruppen sales Cains
Bryggerigruppen A/S, Denmark, have sold the groups UK brewery Robert Cain & Co. Ltd to R C Brewery Ltd. and Stanhill Investments Ltd for about 39 mio. Dkr.
R C Brewery are taking over the brewery, and Stanhill art taking over the pubs.
The sale has been planned since december 2001.

Carlsberg buys in Bulgaria
Carlsberg Breweries A/S has entered an agreement with Ferroal Ltd. to acquire 59.4 per cent of the Bulgarian brewery Shumensko. Ferroal continues as a minority shareholder. The acquisition is subject to approval by local authorities.
Shumensko, which is situated in the town Shumen close to the Black Sea coast, has over the last few years experienced substantial growth and today has a market share of approx. 8 per cent of a total market of nearly 4.5 million hectolitres beer. The Bulgarian per capita consumption is 54 litres. The Shumensko brand is among the few traditional quality brands, and will therefore be the core brand in the future product portfolio. Furthermore, Carlsberg Breweries expects to introduce both the Carlsberg and Tuborg brands on the Bulgarian market.

New beerorganisation in Austria
"Kampagne for good beer", in German, "Kampagne für Gutes Bier", KGB, is the name of a new organisation for beerfriends in Austria.
The organisation will protect the rights of beer-consumers, promote a beerculture and support a wide selection of firstclass beer in Austria.
The organisation will make the homesite www.kgbier.at and are holding the first meeting at Siebensternsbräu, Sibensterngasse 19, Wien, Austria.

BBH builds new brewery in Eastern Siberia, Russia
The largest Russian brewery Baltika, which is a subsidiary of Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH), is building a new brewery in Habarovsk in Eastern Siberia. The population of the Habarovsk-region is approx. 10 million.
The capacity of the new brewery will be 1 million hl, and the brewery is scheduled to start brewing beer in the summer of 2003. The investment is expected to be around USD 50 million.
The new brewery will further strengthen BBH's market position in Eastern Russia. At the same time it will result in lower distribution costs of Baltika beer, which is the biggest beer brand in Russia.
Today, Baltika beer is brewed at breweries in the Western and Southern part of Russia.

SAB buys Miller
The South African Brewerie's (SAB) board has agreed to pay about $5bn for Miller. The deal will make SAB the worlds second largest brewer.
The american tobacco company Philip Morris, who ownes Miller, will emerge a stake of about 35 per cent in the new company SABMiller.
Miller has about 21 per cent of the american market.

Fuller's profit fell
Problems in the late-night drinking market in the bars Broadwalk and Katabatic results in a slightly fall in profits for the UK brewing group Fuller, Smith & Turner.
The group has now sold the loss-making bars.

Carlsberg acquires majority shareholding in Panonska
Carlsberg Breweries A/S increases its shareholding in the Panonska brewery i Croatia to 80 per cent by acquiring Podravka Food Industries' 40 per cent shareholding. The purchasing price is approx. USD 11 million.
With this acquisition, Carlsberg Breweries wants to secure greater influence on the future development of the brewery.
Carlsberg's history in Croatia and its co-operation with Podravka date back to 1971, when an agreement regarding the brewing and marketing of Tuborg beer was entered. In 1995, Carlsberg acquired a 40 per cent shareholding in Panonska.
In order to extend the capacity, approx. USD 50 million was invested in 1977 in a modern and efficient brewery, which was built by Danbrew Ltd. A/S. A subsidiary of Carlsberg Breweries.

Carlsberg - better than expected
The Carlsberg Group presented today a Q1 account better than expected.
Operating profit amounted to DKK 439m against DKK 144m last year, it is a progress at +205 per cent.
At the same time has the group a progress in beer volume compared to last year of +21 per cent to 16.0m hl.
The progress is especially in West- and Easteurope, while parts of Asia has shown decline.

Baltic Brewerages Holdning are investing about DKK 400m in a new brewery i Kiev, Ukraine. The brewery gets a capasity of 1,2 m hl beer pro year.

Ambew buys 36 per cent of Quilmes
The Brazilian brewer Ambev make public that they will buy 36 per cent of the voting stakes in Quilmes, Argentina?s largest brewer.
Ambev?s buy seems to be unfortunately for the Dutch brewer Heineken, who owns 15 per cent of Quilmes and competes with Ambev on seveal markets in South America.

Czechvar beats expectations in US
The Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvars beer Czechvar beats all expectations in US, the beer sold more than 187.000 gallons in US in 2001 and about 10.000 gallons in Canada. The expectations was around 66.000 gallons.
Budejovicky Budvar is now planning to extend the distribution in US from 15 to 20 states.

Interbrew buys in China
Interbrew, the worlds second largest brewer, are planing to buy 25 per cent of the Zhu Jiang Brewery in Guangdong, China.
Zhu Jiang has the brands Zhu Jiang and Supra, and the brewery has about 50 per cent of the beer market in Guangdong Province.

British monk beer
The monks at the Chester Cathedral near Manchester, UK, has taken an old tradition up. They produce beer: Chester Pilgrim Ale. And the britishs has already taken the ale to their hearts, writes the danish newpaper Kristeligt Dagblad.

Progress because of buying
The result for 2001 for the danish brewer Bryggerigruppen shows an fall in the profit, in difiance of a 20 per cent rise in the turnover. But the turnover would have showed a negativ result, if Bryggerigruppen not have bought Albani Bryggerierne in Denmark and Kalnapilis in Lituania.

Scandinavian cooperation

EC accuses Heineken and Carlsberg
The European Commission are accusing Heineken and Carlsberg for, during the period 1993-96, to practice a limit competition in their respective home markets.
Carlsberg admit that a few business related talks did take place
between Carlsberg's and Heineken's former chief executive officers. But neither Carslberg or Heineken does concur with the opinion of the Commission.
The brewers will now get opportunity to defend them self, before the EC take further steps.

Last year rose the sale of beer in cans with sex million litre, and today is every third sold beer in Norway in a can.

Carlsberg Asia not obliged to make public offer in Malaysia
The Malaysian stock exchange authorities have approved that Carlsberg Asia Holdings Pte. Ltd. is not obliged to make a public offer to the other shareholders of Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Berhad.
Carlsberg Asia is now established and therefore Carlsberg will consolidate Carlsberg Asia pro rata (50 per cent) as of 1. January 2002.

Carlsberg incres an reduce

German Bitburger Gruppe has bought 48.97 per cent of the shares in also german Wernesgrüner Brauerei AG, Steinberg.
Wernesgrüner Pils is the third biggest brand in the earliere Eastgermany.

BBH buys their 18. brewery
Baltic Beverages Holding(BBH) has made a deal with the shareholders to buy 70 per cent of Voronezh Brewery, which i located in the southern part of Russia, about 500 kilometers south of Moscow.

S&N buys 40 per cent of an Indian brewery
British Scottish & Newcastle has end a deal to invest in the brewery arm of United Breweries in India. UB produce the market-leading brand Kingfisher Lager.
The deal involve the creation of a new Indian brewing group, who will be owned 40 per cent by S&N, 40 per cent by UB and 20 per cent by management.
UB has 37 per cent of the Indian beer-market, and S&N hopes with the investment to could introduce some of its own brands into India.

Carlsberg Asia increases shareholding in Hite
Carlsberg Asia Ltd. acquires 8.4 per cent of the share capital in Hite Brewery, South Korea for approx. USD 68 million thus increasing its shareholding in the biggest South Korean brewery. The acquisition strengthens both Carlsberg Asia's position as one of Asia's largest brewery groups and the co-operation with the Park family. The Park family has controlled the company since its establishment in 1933.
The total control of the Hite share capital is now just above 25 per cent.
Today, Hite is South Korea's biggest brewery with a market share of 54 per cent.

Asahi introduce Super Dry in Thailand
By a partnership with Khonkaen Brewery, Thailand, are Japans largest beer brewer Asahi Breweries introducing their top-selling brand Super Dry in Thailand.

Only four months before Alfred Henry Heineken has planed to retire as chairman he died at the age of 78.
Alfred Henry Heineken owned more than 50 per cent of Heineken Holding. He started in the company i 1942, as 18-year-old.
He designed the famous green bottle and the logo with the red star and the graceful black banner bearing the brand name.
